ABPI response to UK Biobank whole genome sequencing dataset

UK Biobank has sequenced and is releasing the full genetic code of 500,000 volunteers. The dataset is the world’s largest-by-far single set of sequencing data and is set to drive the discovery of new treatments. Commenting on the announcement, Richard Torbett, ABPI Chief Executive said:

"Completing the world's largest genetic project is a remarkable achievement by the UK Biobank. This milestone opens new doors for collaboration and innovation for researchers around the world, including from the pharmaceutical industry. The wealth of information generated from the sequencing will accelerate our understanding of diseases, helping us to develop more targeted medicines and potentially life-changing treatments for patients."

The ABPI exists to make the UK the best place in the world to research, develop and use new medicines. We represent companies of all sizes who invest in discovering the medicines of the future.

Our members supply cutting edge treatments that improve and save the lives of millions of people. We work in partnership with Government and the NHS so patients can get new treatments faster and the NHS can plan how much it spends on medicines. Every day, we partner with organisations in the life sciences community and beyond to transform lives across the UK.
