INTRODUCTION
In 2003, the ABPI decided to establish a new office in Wales,
to represent the industry in the Principality. However, it
also reflected the importance of the devolved powers of the
Welsh Assembly Government, particularly in relation to Health.
The new office will assist the industry to understand the
evolving differences between Wales and England and will also
contribute to Wales only bodies, such as the All Wales Medicines
Strategy Group and the NHS Wales Industry Forum. As well as
this, the staff at ABPI Cymru Wales will monitor policy decisions
that are likely to impact on the whole of the UK. This includes,
currently, the possibility of free prescriptions, the National
Audit Office Report and the Therapeutic Assessment Process.
Also of great importance will be to support and develop the
work being undertaken by the ABPI Wales Industry Group, which
provides a forum for the pharmaceutical industry in the Principality.
Alongside this work, the office will also support the development
into Research and Development and further investment into
Wales.
