Prostate Cancer

Current treatments

The treatment options available for prostate cancer are listed above and the doctor will need to assess many different factors in recommending the best treatment for any given person. It is important to recognise that all the methods have advantages and disadvantages.

The importance of the pros and cons will vary with age and health and with the stage the cancer has reached. A major operation such as radical prostatectomy would be risky for a man in his late 70s. By contrast, watchful waiting would be acceptable in an elderly person with a slow-growing tumour or one who has other illnesses, but less so for an otherwise fit younger man.
