| Medicines
for a healthy future |
| |
Giving the NHS value for money |
|
Research and development |
 |
Greater use of modern medicines has helped the
NHS to meet its targets to improve the standards
of treatment and ensure greater consistency across
the country for patients |
 |
The industry invested more than £3.5 billion
in UK research and development – nearly £10
million every day |
 |
Sales to the NHS were £9.5 billion, yet
medicines account for only around 12 per cent of
total NHS costs |
 |
Pharmaceutical companies carry out nearly a quarter
of all business research and development in the
UK, and spend more than a fifth of their gross
output on R&D |
 |
Modern medicines offer real value for money – in
real terms, NHS medicines prices are more than
15 per cent lower than ten years ago |
 |
A quarter of the world’s top 100 medicines
were discovered and developed in Britain, more
than any country except the USA |
 |
The average prescription costs around £11,
while a day in hospital costs about £200 |
 |
Exports and employment
Pharmaceutical industry exports in 2003 were an estimated record £11.8
billion, creating a trade surplus of £3.1 billion |
 |
The pharmaceutical industry provides the nation’s
medicines to the NHS at a daily cost of just 40
pence per person – less than a half of what
we spend on alcohol |
 |
The industry employs around 83,000 people and
generates another 250,000 jobs in related industries |
 |
The annual cost of medicines prescribed by GPs
in Britain is about £160 per person – much
less than in other comparable countries |
 |
Exports per employee were £136,000 for
the year |
