ABPI achievements

Keeping ahead of the competition
  The ABPI has    
* Built on the success of the Prime Minister’s Pharmaceutical Industry Competitiveness Task Force’s initial meetings between Government and industry leaders to resolve and implement key strategic issues * Lobbied successfully for amendments to existing legislation on animal extremism, bringing better protection for company personnel and property
* Consulted its members in advance of the review of the PPRS scheme in 2004 and submitted its detailed comments to the Department of Health * Promoted a successful series of Best Practice Workshops where member companies can share their experience on manufacturing topics
* Worked with its European counterparts to ensure a successful review of pharmaceutical legislation in Europe in advance of the enlargement of the EU in May 2004    

 

Partnership with the NHS
  The ABPI has    
* Joined the Department of Health and other stakeholders in the development and implementation of five National Service Frameworks in renal services, mental health, children’s services, diabetes and older people, to deliver better standards of NHS treatment * Launched the ABPI Clinical Trial Register, giving details of nearly 100 Phase 3 trials involving patients in the UK
* Launched the Model Clinical Trial Agreement, a template for contracts between a pharmaceutical companies and NHS hospital trusts * Worked actively with the New Drugs Committee of the Scottish Medicines Consortium, which will strengthen the industry’s voice in Scotland to the benefit of patients and NHSScotland

 

Making the message clear
  The ABPI has    
* Taken a leading part in Ask About Medicines Week, a public health initiative encouraging people to seek information about their medicines, developing and distributing 200,000 booklets * Supported the Coalition for Medical Progress, to explain the need for and benefits of the use of animals in biomedical research
* Worked through Datapharm Communications to expand the scope of the electronic Medicines Compendium as a world-class online source of medicines information * Worked towards an acceptance by regulators and key stakeholder groups of European pharmaceutical industry Internet guidelines in the UK
* Organised an extensive and consistent media programme of press articles, meetings with journalists, radio days and television interviews on a range of vital issues affecting the industry * Launched ABPI Scotland’s A Partnership for Health, a manifesto for the Scottish General Election 2003 on behalf of the Pharmaceutical Industry Council
* Worked with patient groups to launch new Target booklets on schizophrenia and skin conditions * Established ABPI Cymru Wales in Cardiff to work in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government and the NHS in Wales

Industry achievements

Medicines for a healthy future
  Giving the NHS value for money   Research and development
* Greater use of modern medicines has helped the NHS to meet its targets to improve the standards of treatment and ensure greater consistency across the country for patients * The industry invested more than £3.5 billion in UK research and development – nearly £10 million every day
* Sales to the NHS were £9.5 billion, yet medicines account for only around 12 per cent of total NHS costs * Pharmaceutical companies carry out nearly a quarter of all business research and development in the UK, and spend more than a fifth of their gross output on R&D
* Modern medicines offer real value for money – in real terms, NHS medicines prices are more than 15 per cent lower than ten years ago * A quarter of the world’s top 100 medicines were discovered and developed in Britain, more than any country except the USA
* The average prescription costs around £11, while a day in hospital costs about £200
*
Exports and employment
Pharmaceutical industry exports in 2003 were an estimated record £11.8 billion, creating a trade surplus of £3.1 billion
* The pharmaceutical industry provides the nation’s medicines to the NHS at a daily cost of just 40 pence per person – less than a half of what we spend on alcohol * The industry employs around 83,000 people and generates another 250,000 jobs in related industries
* The annual cost of medicines prescribed by GPs in Britain is about £160 per person – much less than in other comparable countries * Exports per employee were £136,000 for the year
