Products, including prescription medicines, vaccines, over the counter medicines and other medical supplies are donated to organisations like International Health Partners (IHP) - Europe’s largest coordinator of donated medical product – who ensure they reach those most in need, when they are most needed through Non-Governmental Bodies (NGOs) responding to crises on the ground.
Medicines reach some of the most troubled areas of the world, like Yemen, Sierra Leone, Haiti and Somalia, delivered in one of three key ways:
- Disaster response – lifesaving treatments provided immediately after a disaster, and filling gaps in supply during the recovery and reconstruction.
- Essential Health Packs – pre-packed kits of essential medicines that can be used by healthcare professionals anywhere in the world they are needed.
- Health programmes – high quality healthcare products supporting longer term programmes in countries that suffer from a chronic lack of access to medicines, from supporting single hospitals to focusing on specific diseases, and more comprehensive country-wide initiatives for capacity building.
