The new diploma in science, announced by the Government today, has been warmly welcomed by the
Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI).
The ABPI said it especially welcomed the fact that the new diploma provides an additional route
for students and is not a replacement for traditional GCSE and A-levels.
“The research-based pharmaceutical industry in the UK needs young, innovative scientists and we
are optimistic that the new qualification will open up science as a career for students who may
not otherwise have considered studying it,” said Dr Philip Wright, Director of Science and
Technology at the ABPI.
The ABPI looks forward to working with the Government and its agencies on developing the outlines
of the new science diploma.
