NEW GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION ON ANIMAL RIGHTS EXTREMISTS MUST BE ENFORCED, SAYS ABPI

Friday, July 1st, 2005

The new Government legislation implemented today with the aim of tackling the violence and intimidation by animals rights extremists has been welcomed by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI).

But the ABPI said that it was essential that the new legislation was enforced, and that sufficient resource is devoted to tackling the illegal attacks by extremists.

"People are entitled to express their opinion on animal rights issues, but not to commit acts of violence or offer threats to those engaged in legitimate scientific research into innovative medicines," said Dr Philip Wright, Director of Science and Technology at the ABPI.

"This new legislation sends out a clear message from the Government to the extremist fringe that their behaviour cannot be tolerated in a democratic society, but we do need to be sure that there is sufficient police resource and commitment to enforce it."
