In 2015, the ABPI and NHS England agreed to develop a programme of activity around the principles of medicines optimisation (MO) and support the NHS to understand the benefits of the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (PPRS).
Harriet Lewis, ABPI Medicines Optimisation Lead and NHS Partnership Manager (North), was interviewed by Chemist + Druggist in April 2016 about the importance of medicines optimisation. Watch the interview below. The interview was originially featured online on the Chemist + Druggist website here.
Both the pharmaceutical industry and the NHS have a shared interest in ensuring that patients can access and use the most effective medicines possible to deliver the best health outcomes. The pharmaceutical industry supports the principles of medicines optimisation and ongoing initiatives that embed good clinical care for patients to receive the right choice of medicine that is appropriate for their needs.
As part of the collaboration with NHS England, we ran a series of best practice roadshows in partnership with the Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) across England. The roadshows focused on promoting the importance of a patient-centred approach to prescribing to ensure that patients gain the most benefit from the medicines prescribed for them.
We produced a consolidated report from these roadshows to provide practical guidance to all healthcare professionals, commissioners, and providers. Read the report.
