Transposition of European directive 2010/63/EU - protection of animals used for scientific purposes

Animal research is a small but vital and necessary part of the research and development of innovative medicines. The industry supports and embeds the principles of the 3Rs in its research (replacement, refinement and reduction of animals in research), and uses valid alternative methods where possible. We welcomed the objectives of the new EU Directive 2010/63 in raising animal welfare standards, promoting the 3Rs and harmonising regulation across Europe. We are supportive of the national transposition of the EU Directive in achieving these objectives, enabling medical research to flourish thereby bringing patient benefit and maintaining UK and EU competitiveness.

The ABPI is a member of the UK Bioscience Sector Coalition which has submitted a response to this consultation. We are in agreement with and support the coalition's submission.
