The importance of research and development and the uptake of innovation in contributing to the health and wealth of the nation is a key issue. The NHS holds an important key to this success because of the scale of data and information about patient outcomes that it generates on a daily basis. Partnership working could facilitate a better understanding of treatment outcomes and contribute to a culture of research where high performance in innovative clinical trials is a given.
It was universally agreed that the UK can provide a positive and stable environment for industry and that the NHS provides a unique setting for partnership working; however, it was stressed that governments outside the UK are highly proactive and resourceful in creating favourable conditions to attract industry and that we must pay great attention to keeping our competitive edge.
