Companies that produce medicines  oversee the development of a medicine from when it is identified as a potentially suitable investigational medicinal product, through to the first research trials in humans (also called first-in-man clinical trials), then clinical trials in patients (usually people living with the disease the new medicine is meant to treat); right through to when the a medicine is licensed and ready for a doctor to write a prescription in normal clinical practice.
