Bina Rawal added;
"Of particular interest is the £34m investment in a new data research network and four administrative data research centres to help the UK get ahead in the global technology race.
"The pharmaceutical industry and the NHS are at the centre of a rapidly proliferating data ecosystem, which will be one of the most significant drivers of change for both the public and private sectors over the next few years. This investment is a sure sign that the Government is responding positively to the changes in the UK’s research data landscape. The pharmaceutical industry will be embracing the new opportunities this creates for collaboration, and next month, the ABPI is partnering with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to host an important conference that will explore how we can harness the benefits of big data to improve health and accelerate innovation."

This £34m investment forms part of the Government's wider £189m research initiative on ‘Big Data’. It is in direct response to the recommendations from the Administrative Data Taskforce (ADT) formed in December 2011 by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Medical Research Council (MRC) and Wellcome Trust, and chaired by Sir Alan Langlands.
