Sixteen companies have joined the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) this year, it was announced today.
The new members include three pharmaceutical companies taking up full membership and 13 general affiliate members.
ABPI Head of Membership Services, Jeremy Way said: “We are proud to welcome such a professional and diverse range of new members to the ABPI. The membership list has increased by 16 companies for the first half of 2008. There has been particular positive growth in the General Affiliate membership category, proving that the ABPI is recognised as a world class trade association and respected by the wider business community.”

Merz Pharma UK – Merz is a leading German pharmaceutical company celebrating its centenary year, with its own platform for clinical research and development. Merz Pharma UK is a subsidiary of Merz Pharmaceuticals and is currently focused on treatments in both CNS and aesthetic medicine.
Alexion Pharmaceuticals - Alexion, based in Cheshire has combined its expertise in immunobiology, clinical development, and human antibody engineering to enable the development of a large array of monoclonal antibody and other recombinant therapeutics targeting the treatment of a diverse collection of severe disease states, including heamatologic and cardiovascular disorders, autoimmune diseases and cancer.
Basilea Pharmaceuticals Ltd – is the UK affiliate of Basilea Pharmaceutica AG., headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. Basilea’s integrated research and development operations are focused on new antibacterial, antifungal and dermatology drugs. The company is currently building its sales and marketing organisation. Basilea’s products are targeted to satisfy high medical and patient needs in the hospital and specialty care setting. The late-stage portfolio includes two drugs under regulatory review (alitretinoin and ceftobiprole) and one phase III investigational drug (isavuconazole).
