More funding is needed for a subject that is key to the success of high-tech industries, including pharmaceuticals, the ABPI said. Subjects of strategic importance to the UK economy are not recognised by funding bodies as deserving of increased cash.
However, the Government has responded well to an earlier ABPI report that also highlighted the issue, and many of its recommendations are being followed up. There has been a slower response in other areas, such as the development of a science diploma for the 14-19 age group.
“The CBI has done well to highlight an issue that is of crucial importance to the pharmaceutical industry, which researches, develops and manufactures the medicines of the future,” said Nigel Brooksby, President of the ABPI. “Without the skills necessary to carry out scientific research, Britain’s world-leading position in this field will be put at risk.”
