The ABPI warmly welcomes the strong impetus given to UK health research by the Cooksey Review. In particular, the ABPI supports its focus on ring-fencing R&D funding, creating a unified UK strategy, and strengthening translational research, to bring the fruits of bioscience to patients.
"This report is very timely. If the UK is to retain its position in the life sciences and pharmaceutical R&D in the face of intensified global competition, it must strive to improve further its scientific education and research base, its capabilities to conduct clinical trials, and its rate of adoption of new technologies," said Dr Richard Barker ABPI Director General.
"As the Government responds to this report, it has the opportunity to give a real shot in the arm to UK bioscience, and the ability of the public and private sector to work together to bring new medicines more rapidly to patients."
The ABPI is committed to play its full part in the 'new partnership' called for in the review, and in helping shape the Cooksey recommendations as they are further defined and implemented. By focusing increased research on the major, unmet clinical needs of the UK, and enabling patients to benefit more quickly, both the health and prosperity of the country will be advanced.
