​The booklet, Animal research and human medicine, is designed to support teachers working with pupils on the issues in this area, in subjects ranging from Citizenship to Science and Religious Education.

“Animal research remains a vital part of developing a new medicine, but it is an area that continues to arouse controversy,” said Dr Philip Wright, Director of Science and Technology at the ABPI. “It is very important that schoolchildren should understand the issues concerned and learn how to debate them in a rational and constructive way.”

The booklet focuses on the current social, medical, legal and welfare environment in which medicines research takes place, and explains why animal research is still necessary in medicines development. It looks closely at the need to develop yet more alternatives to the use of animals but also explores the limitations of these alternatives.

Linked to the booklet are some activities – including a role play – and teacher’s notes.
