    School posters explain aspects of biotechnology and genomics

Six new posters explaining how different aspects of biotechnology and genomics are used in modern medicines research and development have been produced by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI).

The UK is a world leader in the field of biotechnology and medicines research, and these posters have been prepared to link with the post-16 biology curriculum. Subjects covered in the series are:

  • Biotechnology
  • Genetic engineering
  • Human genome project
  • Cloning
  • Polymerase chain reaction
  • Stem cell research

One set of posters has been sent free to schools and colleges with post-16 students, and the content of each poster has been expanded on the ABPI website for schools and colleges at www.abpischools.org.uk. Information, activities and animation are provided to help students understand the topics covered.

"The subjects we have chosen are rapidly developing fields, and the aim of the posters and the associated material on the website is to enable students to explore the cutting edge developments in these fields as well as some of the ethical issues linked to these new technologies," said Sarah Jones, Head of Education at the ABPI.

Schools, colleges or students who want further copies of the posters can get them at a cost of £5, to cover production, post and packaging, from;

ABPI Publications Department, 12 Whitehall, London SW1A 2DY, tel 020 7930 3477;
