How many people are employed in the pharmaceutical industry?  

The pharmaceutical industry in the UK employs around 67,000 people directly (25,000 of those in research and development).

Where can I find information on over-the-counter medicines?  

We are the trade association representing companies engaged in research, development, manufacturing and marketing of prescription medicines and therefore we do not represent the views of the manufacturers of over-the-counter medicines (OTCs). You should contact the Proprietary Association of Great Britain (PAGB) for information about OTC medicines. For more information visit www.pagb.co.uk.

Where can I find information on medical devices/medical equipment/hospital supplies?  

We are the trade association representing companies engaged in research, development, manufacturing and marketing of prescription medicines. Where can I find a list of pharmaceutical manufacturers? 

This information is available from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Some of our members are manufacturers in the UK – please refer to the lists of ABPI members. In addition, you could contact The Proprietary Association of Great Britain (PAGB) at www.pagb.co.uk and the British Generic Manufacturers Association at www.britishgenerics.co.uk.

I used to receive a copy of the Data Sheet Compendium, how can I get a copy? 

For up to date information visit the electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC) at www.medicines.org.uk/emc. Please note that the Data Sheet Compendium publication has now been discontinued.

How do I get information about taking part in a clinical trial? 

Most of the ABPI’s Research Affiliates are involved in clinical trials and the list is available on the Research Affiliates membership list page. If you have an interest in a particular disease or condition, patients groups are a good source of information and they may be able to put you in contact with the organisations involved in the clinical trials currently being carried out. For more information see the Links section.

How can I report a side effect associated with my medication? 

You should report a side effect from a medicine to your doctor in the first instance. You can also report a medicine side effect online via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at http://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk

Is it possible for individuals to become members of the ABPI, or is membership only open to companies?

ABPI is governed by a Constitution which currently does not allow individuals to join the ABPI. However, once a company, partnership or LLP has joined the Association, we work closely with that member’s individual staff across a range of activities to ensure they are informed about our activities and that we engage with them as best suits their own organisation,

Can you please send me information on courses/seminars about the latest ABPI Code of Practice?

The PMCPA holds regular training seminars on the requirements of the Code of Practice. These seminars are open to all.

The seminars have been designed to explain the requirements of the Code:

  • to those responsible for day-to-day commissioning and creation of promotional material and to those writing and approving copy and artwork
  • to those responsible for determining promotional methods including professional representation, hospitality to health professionals and the use of audio-visual and related communications technology
  • to those responsible for producing material aimed at patients or the general public and for those working with patient organisations.

The seminars also cover the procedures followed by the PMCPA, the Code of Practice Panel and the Code of Practice Appeal Board.
