ABPI SCOTLAND

INTRODUCTION

ABPI Scotland is the voice of the pharmaceutical industry in Scotland.
ABPI Scotland is the Scottish office of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) which is the trade association of the pharmaceutical industry which brings together companies in the United Kingdom producing prescription medicines, other organisations involved in pharmaceutical research and development and those with an interest in the pharmaceutical industry operating in the UK.

Scotland has a worldwide reputation for clinical excellence founded upon the medical tradition that discovered anaesthesia and antibiotics. It is supported by its medical schools and universities which excel in biomedical science including pharmacy, pharmacology and genetics.

Although Scotland's population represents 10 per cent of the UK's, 20 per cent of all money spent on clinical research in the UK is spent in Scotland. This supports research and development of innovative medicines, allowing Scottish patients to be among the first to benefit from the development of new medicines treating life threatening and debilitating diseases.

Pharmaceutical companies directly employ 5,000 people in Scotland

ABPI Scotland seeks to promote the growth and success of its member companies, the industry's international competitiveness, ensure that the industry is recognised as an integral partner in the provision of health care and to assure Scotland's patients have access to the best available medicines.

Disease Specific Industry Groups

ABPI Scotland currently runs 9 disease specific industry groups covering a growing spectrum of conditions. These industry groups work collaboratively at a national level with the NHS, the SGHD & patient groups to d eliver improved patient outcomes in the specific disease area. ABPI Scotland’s industry groups form the backbone of our activity in Scotland: working to develop and deliver collaborative projects, giving support to patient organisations and informing policy by responding to relevant consultation documents issued by the Scottish Government and NHSScotland.
